Job Description:

Operates a variety of heavy machinery that is appropriate to complete the requirements of the project.  Heavy equipment may include trucks, front-end loaders, dozers, graders, and other pieces of equipment.  The operator is responsible for operating heavy equipment in a safe and effective manner.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Ability to operate in a constant state of alertness and in a safe manner
  • Performs pre-operation and post-operation inspection of the equipment to ensure its in safe and proper working order
  • Safely and proficiently operates equipment using proper techniques
  • Continuously monitors equipment to ensure proper operations and minimal down time
  • Maintain a safe work area by setting up appropriate barricades and warning devices
  • Ensures that equipment is properly cleaned, serviced and stored at the end of work day
  • Advise supervisor of any requirements for maintenance or repairs
  • Maintain records of work performed, as required
  • Enforce the Scherer Construction/OSHA safety standards at all times
  • Perform other duties as assigned by President or Superintendent

Physical Requirements:

  • Must be able to push, pull up, bend at the knees and waist, twist body at waist, raise and hold arms overhead, turn head-neck-shoulders as needed
  • Must be able to stand, squat and kneel on hard surfaces
  • Must be able to grasp and hold tools and other items with hands
  • Must be able to work frequently in hot temperatures, loud noises and exhaust fumes

Job Skills, Knowledge, Training and Experience:

  • Sound knowledge of various types of construction equipment, maintenance, and repair of equipment 
  • Capable of operating several different types of construction equipment in a safe and responsible manner
  • Knowledge of DOT, federal, state, and local regulations
  • Ability to analyze and resolve problems
  • Effective communication skills
  • Ability to multi-task and prioritize to meet deadlines
  • Ability to judge distances, good sense of balance, and eye-hand-foot coordination
  • Rely on extensive experience and judgment to plan and accomplish Company goals

Education and Training Requirements:

  • High School Diploma or its equivalent
  • 2 years’ work experience as an equipment operator

Licensing Requirements:

  • Valid Driver’s license with clear MVR record
  • MOT certification preferred
